Installing Wallpaper - installing wallpaper over wallpaper

When you want to get wallpaper placed in your own home, consider these things. Wallpaper includes a longevity over paint. It will outlast paint 8 to at least one. It gives your walls that "WOW" you can't get with paint. Properly installed it'll last for many years and can be removed easily when applied more than a good primer/sealer. The horror stories I have seen each time a contractor or home owner has installed wallpaper on the sub standard primer over my 27 years available have given this industry a undeserving bad name.

If you're removing old wallpaper before installing new, make use of a good stripping solution that can be sprayed by having a good 1 1/2 gal. increase garden sprayer. First you will need to strip the face (the printed surface) off before the solution will penetrate the backing. Make sure to cover all electrical plates with duct tape to stop any water in contact with them. Don't be shy using the amount you add in the sprayer and be shy how much you spray for the wall. Fill the sprayer with tepid to warm water to aid the solution penetrate better. Cover a floor with painters drop cloths or use several towels to absorb the run off. I like to spray several light coats for the wall, waiting about 3-5 minutes involving. Let the solution do the work. The backing paper should will bubble and you may start wanting to peel, scrape the backing off. Make sure never to gouge the walls you can forget you must. If the walls were prepared with a primer/sealer, the backing should are removed clean. If they just weren't, say a prayer because you probably will damage the wall surface wanting to get rid of the backing.

If the walls are painted, then you're able to apply a great primer/sealer that can prepare the counter for that new wallpaper. I like two bands "Zinzer 1-2-3 and" Kilz Premium". you will find others for the market realistically work and are suited to wallpaper, but I used both of these for 27 many have experienced good results with both.

Please note though: These will NOT focus on a High shine or oil surface. For those walls you will need to make use of a product called "Gripper" Most knowledgeable Paint stores may help you using this type of. Prime the walls and let dry magically.

Installing wallpaper just isn't for everyone. It takes a special skill and lots of patience. That being said, I will attempt to share my knowledge over the past 27 years to give you the best advice that I can.

When picking out the wallpaper, there are several things to remember. Shinny finishes on wallpaper will often highlight any texture or imperfections around the walls which are to get covered. If you're handling a textured wall, try to pick a wallpaper that can disguise (hide) the texture. The other option would be to have a sheet rock contractor are available in an even out the texture. Some textures are less noticeable than these. Be aware that ebony wallpapers will usually show their seems better that light colors. Large repeats within the pattern match will cause more waste plus more wallpaper. Some wallpapers are pre-pasted and some usually are not. Wallpapers can be bought in double rolls with widths which range from 20 1/2"...27" and 36."

Your basic tools that you will need are: A plastic smoothing tool or possibly a smoothing brush (I use the plastic), a clear, crisp pair of scissors, an amount, a measuring tape (a minimum of 12'), single edge or snap off blades (Lots of these), a 6" metal putty knife (for trimming along edges using your shaver), some form of table to paste and trim your wallpaper, a ladder (high enough to arrive at the ceiling without the danger of falling over, I utilize a 4' ladder for 8' and 9' ceilings).

So, if I have never scared you off yet, let me try to explain how you can install your wallpaper. Always read the directions (I still do and learn something on a regular basis, to not mention it saves my Butt if something goes completely wrong!)

I usually confirm the width with the wallpaper first and earn small marks with a pencil (NO PENS) on the walls to view where the seams might land if I were only available in a specific area. After that, I will make adjustments forwards and backwards for top level seam placement that I can. Once this is achieved, I will produce a cut list of the pieces I need. I would not recommend this to everyone. You might want to cut 3 sheets during a period, paste and put them to use before cutting anymore. I like to allow 3"-4" within the exact measurement with the wall for my selvage edge trimming upper and lower.

I paste ALL my wallpaper. Pre-pasted is pasted with a thinned down version with the regular wallpaper paste that I use. This makes it much more movable on the wall and offers it a supplementary grip. Paste 2 -3 sheets, fold the sheets paste to paste in order that they is not going to dry and allow them sit 3-5 minutes. This gives them time and energy to relax and expand

(yes wallpaper is made from wood when wood gets wet, it expands). Take the first sheet and put it on to the line for the wall that you simply made (while waiting for your wallpaper to wind down). Carefully align it next on the pencil mark, starting at the very top, leaving about 2 inches wrapped onto the crown or ceiling. Continue to align the sting to the pencil mark down the wall. Use your smoothing tool to smooth out your wallpaper and also the bubbles. That care never to treat the wallpaper to aggressive or it'll tear. Use your 6' putty knife to support wallpaper down when you use a shaver to trim upper and lower. use 1 blade per cut! Take care to scrub the wallpaper which has a soft sponge and towel dry.

Congratulation, You just hung the first part of wallpaper. Continue with the next piece and align it on the one around the wall, ensuring that the pattern matches. Smooth, trim, wash and towel dry. Please note that small bubbles within the wallpaper are typical and will disappear when wallpaper is entirely dry ( about 2 days).

When working around windows and doors, take care to never tear the wallpaper on the corners. I use my scissors to make a relief cut, coming on the corner of the door or window with my scissors and stopping on or perhaps a little short in the corner. This will permit you to work the sheet just about to happen without tearing it.

Remember and also hardwearing . work table clean of glue. Have several sponges handy to wash the table, your tools, hands and also the finished wallpaper. Any glue left on the wallpaper could damage the finished surface as time passes (several months might use therefore the print begins to flake off leading) Also make sure you clean the ceiling, crown, baseboards, cabinets with clean water and towel dry.

Good luck and don't forget, when all else  a professional!
