Scenery Wallpaper: Wallpaper Installation

Installing Wallpaper - installing wallpaper

When you want to have wallpaper placed in your own home, to understand things. Wallpaper features a longevity over paint. It will outlast paint 8 one. It gives your walls that "WOW" you can not get with paint. Properly installed it'll last for many years and can be removed easily when applied more than a good primer/sealer. The horror stories I have seen when a contractor or property owner has installed wallpaper on the sub standard primer over my 27 years in the business have given this industry a undeserving bad name.

If you might be removing old wallpaper before installing new, work with a good stripping solution that may be sprayed by way of a good 1 1/2 gal. power up garden sprayer. First you will have to strip the facial skin (the printed surface) off prior to solution will penetrate the backing. Make sure to cover all electrical plates with duct tape to stop any water coming in contact with them. Don't be shy while using amount you set in to the sprayer and don't be shy on what much you spray for the wall. Fill the sprayer with warm water to aid the solution penetrate better. Cover a floor with painters drop cloths or use several towels to absorb the run off. I like to spray several light coats for the wall, waiting about 3 to 5 minutes between. Let the answer do the work. The backing paper should begin to bubble and you'll start trying to peel, scrape the backing off. Make sure not to gouge the walls no more you need to. If the walls were prepared with a decent primer/sealer, the backing should go clean. If they just weren't, say a prayer when you probably will damage the wall surface attempting to take away the backing.

If the walls are painted, then you might be prepared to apply a fantastic primer/sealer that may prepare the top for the new wallpaper. I like two bands "Zinzer 1-2-3 and" Kilz Premium". you will find others on the market that work well and they are recommended for wallpaper, but I used these for 27 a few years have experienced good results with both.

Please note though: These will NOT focus on a High shine or oil surface. For those walls you will have to make use of a product called "Gripper" Most knowledgeable Paint stores will help you using this. Prime the walls and let dry instantly.

Installing wallpaper is just not for all. It takes a unique skill and several patience. That being said, I will try to share my knowledge throughout the last 27 years to give you the best way forward that I can.

When picking out the wallpaper, you will find several things to remember. Shinny finishes on wallpaper will usually highlight any texture or imperfections for the walls that are being covered. If you're getting through a textured wall, try and look for a wallpaper that can disguise (hide) the texture. The other option would be to own a sheet rock contractor come in a smooth out the texture. Some textures are less noticeable than these. Be aware that dark colored wallpapers will often show their seems slightly more that light colors. Large repeats inside the pattern match may cause more waste plus more wallpaper. Some wallpapers are pre-pasted plus some are not. Wallpapers are offered in double rolls with widths which range from 20 1/2"...27" and 36."

Your basic tools that you'll need are: A plastic smoothing tool or even a smoothing brush (I use the plastic), a sharp set of two scissors, an even, a measuring tape (no less than 12'), single edge or snap off blades (Lots of these), a 6" metal putty knife (for trimming along edges together with your shaver), some type of table to paste and trim your wallpaper, a ladder (high enough to succeed in the ceiling without the danger of falling over, I work with a 4' ladder for 8' and 9' ceilings).

So, if I have not scared you off yet, permit me to make an attempt to explain the best way to install your new wallpaper. Always browse the directions (I still do and learn something all the time, not to mention it saves my Butt if something goes wrong!)

I usually check the width in the wallpaper first and make small marks having a pencil (NO PENS) for the walls to find out the place that the seams might land if I entered a specific area. After that, I will make adjustments forwards and backwards to get the best seam placement that I can. Once this is done, I will make a cut list in the pieces I need. I would not recommend this to everyone. You might want to cut 3 sheets at a time, paste and put them to use before cutting anymore. I like to allow 3"-4" on the exact measurement with the wall for my selvage edge trimming bottom and top.

I paste ALL my wallpaper. Pre-pasted is pasted having a thinned down version in the regular wallpaper paste that I use. This makes it a lot more movable about the wall and provide it a supplementary grip. Paste 2 -3 sheets, fold the sheets paste to paste so that they is not going to normally dry out and allow them to sit 3-5 minutes. This gives them time to relax and expand

(yes wallpaper is made from wood when wood gets wet, it expands). Take the first sheet and use it on the line on the wall that you just made (while waiting for that wallpaper to wind down). Carefully align it next to the pencil mark, starting at the pinnacle, leaving about 2 inches wrapped to the crown or ceiling. Continue to align the edge towards the pencil mark down the wall. Use your smoothing tool to smooth your wallpaper along with the bubbles. That care never to treat the wallpaper to aggressive or it'll tear. Use your 6' putty knife to support wallpaper down when you use a razor blade to trim bottom and top. use 1 blade per cut! Take care to scrub the wallpaper using a soft sponge and towel dry.

Congratulation, You just hung a part of wallpaper. Continue with the next piece and align it on the one for the wall, ensuring that the pattern matches. Smooth, trim, wash and towel dry. Please note that small bubbles beneath the wallpaper are common and will disappear when wallpaper is very dry ( about 2 days).

When working around windows and doors, take care never to tear the wallpaper in the corners. I use my scissors to create a relief cut, coming on the corner with the door or window with my scissors and stopping on or a little short in the corner. This will permit you to work the sheet inevitable without tearing it.

Remember to keep your work table clean of glue. Have several sponges handy to wash the table, your tools, hands and the finished wallpaper. Any glue left about the wallpaper could damage the finished surface over time (several months might go by and therefore the print begins to flake off the leading) Also be sure to clean the ceiling, crown, baseboards, cabinets with clean water and towel dry.

Good luck please remember, when all else  a professional!
